The snare is undoubtedly the most important piece of the drum set, certainly the most used and characteristic “drum.” In fact, often when playing other drum sets, as can happen in recording studios, clubs, or rehearsal rooms, every drummer brings their own snare. This happens for two reasons: one is because its skin is much more subject to wear, the other reason is to have their own characteristic sound and to rely on an already tested feeling.
Snares are characterized by different depths and for this reason are capable of producing a sound that is often more suitable for one genre and less for others. It is not uncommon for drummers to use two different snares to have more versatility between genres. They often use two within the same set.
Generally, snares with greater depths are more common in jazz, while those with lesser depths, capable of producing a drier sound, are used in funk and rock.
