Measurement Microphones

Measurement microphones are used to measure environmental acoustics both on the road and in the studio. They are highly precise instruments on which one can rely to correct the acoustics in an environment, large or small. Measurement microphones are available in a wide range of models to meet various environmental situations. Depending on the needs, one can choose between directional microphones, more sensitive to a particular direction, and omnidirectional microphones, capable of providing the same response regardless of the angle of incidence of the acoustic wave. Generally, the latter are among the most used for environmental acoustic measurement.

Specifically, from an electrical standpoint, measurement microphones can be externally polarized or pre-polarized. The former are used with an external preamplifier and are more precise and stable, consequently preferable for critical measurements; the latter are used with constant current preamplifiers and standard coaxial cables at a lower cost, and are thus considered more suitable for portable applications or in very humid environments.

Online musical instrument store with measurement microphones

In this online musical instrument store, you can find the model most suited to your needs, depending on the environment in which you are measuring. From an application and sound field perspective, measurement microphones can be divided into three categories. The first category includes instruments capable of measuring sound pressure in open fields, i.e., as it would be without the presence of the microphone itself. We know that at high frequencies, the presence of the microphone in the sound field would disturb the measurement, so the microphone's frequency response is adjusted to compensate for this disturbance. These devices are recommended for general sound measurements with sound level meters, for measuring sound power and sound radiation. The second category includes microphones for measuring sound pressure on walls, i.e., at the surface of the microphone diaphragm, and are typically installed in walls. The third and final category includes microphones designed to measure sound coming from different directions, for example in reverberant rooms or with high reflectivity. Musical Store 2005 will be able to advise you on the category most suited to your professional and non-professional needs.

Measurement microphones are used for various professional purposes such as measuring the reverberation frequencies of a room, a recording studio, a concert hall in order to analyze the frequency spectrum and possibly make corrections to the environment to ensure that listening is as pleasant as possible.

Furthermore, they can be used for measurements to ensure that the sounds produced by any source do not exceed legal limits and for all uses where it is necessary to detect sound pressure and frequencies generated widely in an environment or outside.

The microphones used for measurements can be omnidirectional or directional in case one wants to record sounds specifically coming from a source farther away from our measurement point.
